Sis, You Cannot People-Please Your Way Into Purpose
The Holy Ghost Side-Eye we didn't ask for, but probably needed. Scripture: Galatians 1:10 (NIV) β βAm I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God?β
Hey girl hey! π
Can we have a little talk? Have you ever said yes when everything in you was screaming NO? Have you ever agreed to do something, show up somewhere, or carry another person's burden because you didn't want them to be upset with you?
And then you got home, took off your shoes, sat on the edge of your bed, and asked yourself, βGirl, why did you do that?β
Welcome to the club, sis. The membership is free, but the emotional exhaustion is expensive!
Letβs be real, some of us will say yes to everybody and then get mad at ourselves for being overwhelmed. We agree when we want to decline, show up when we need rest, and carry things God never asked us to pick up.Sometimes we become so committed to making sure everybody else is comfortable that we forget to check whether we're okay. We explain our decisions to people who aren't responsible for our lives. We feel guilty for having boundaries. We call it being nice, being helpful, or keeping the peace.
Sis, who told you that being a good woman of God meant being available to everybody? But let's lovingly tell the truth: sometimes, we're afraid that if we disappoint people, they'll stop loving us. The thing is, you can love people without abandoning yourself. Jesus loved people deeply, but He still made room for prayer, solitude, and His assignment. Every request doesn't require your yes, and somebody else's disappointment doesn't automatically mean you've done something wrong.
And that is a heavy way to live.
The Holy Ghost Side-Eye is this: stop confusing people-pleasing with godliness. Boundaries don't make you mean, and saying no doesn't cancel your calling.
Sis, Letβs Reflect:
Where have you been saying yes out of guilt instead of genuine willingness? Ask God for the courage to honor Him with both your yes and your no.
A Little Prayer for the People-Pleasers
God, help me recognize the difference between loving people and living for their approval. Give me the courage to set healthy boundaries without drowning in guilt. Teach me to honor You with my yes and my no. Remind me that my worth isn't determined by how useful I am to other people. Help me walk in obedience, even when somebody doesn't understand my decision. In Jesus' name, amen.
Now go on and practice that boundary, sis. And please don't send a three-paragraph explanation after you say no. π
With grace, melanin, and a little Holy Ghost side-eye,
Grace-N-Melanin
